A new research paper has identified the competencies that can predict children’s future success in mathematics before they start school, but its author warns most intervention often comes too late and is not effectively targeted.
“We know that children who start first grade behind their peers in basic number and simple arithmetic skills are very likely to stay behind throughout schooling and into adulthood," professor David C. Geary said.
