Balaclava State School is a Prep to Year 6 primary school located in the centre of Cairns.
Our students are drawn primarily from the surrounding residential suburbs of the local area. We work to continually foster positive relationships with our families, local businesses, surrounding schools, clubs and professional associations.

The successful candidate will play a key role in implementing and embedding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), trauma-informed practices, and social-emotional learning programs.
A strong commitment to supporting cultural diversity and ensuring equitable outcomes for all students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school'
- Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework to promote a positive and consistent school culture.
- Champion trauma-informed practices to support students with complex needs, ensuring staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively.
- Develop and oversee social-emotional learning programs that enhance student wellbeing, resilience, and engagement.
- Promote and celebrate cultural diversity, fostering an inclusive school community that values and respects all backgrounds.
- Collaborate with teachers, support staff, parents, and external agencies to provide targeted interventions and support for students with diverse needs.
- Lead and manage a team of student support staff, ensuring professional development and capacity building to deliver high-quality services.
- Monitor and analyse student wellbeing and behaviour data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to the school's leadership team, supporting the development and implementation of the school's strategic priorities.
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Demonstrate expertise in Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and its application in a primary school setting.
- Have a strong understanding of trauma-informed practices and their role in supporting student wellbeing.
- Be passionate about promoting cultural diversity and inclusive practices within the school community.
- Have experience in designing and implementing social-emotional learning programs that support student development.
- Possess excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, families, and external stakeholders.
- Be skilled in data analysis and using evidence-based practices to inform decision-making and improve student outcomes.
