Title: Complex Needs Teaching Assistant
The Role:
Support pupils with complex and profound additional needs to access learning, develop independence and achieve their full potential. As a Complex Needs Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, the SENCO, support staff, families and external professionals to provide high-quality, personalised support based on each pupil's individual needs. The role may involve supporting pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), autism, physical disabilities, sensory needs, communication difficulties and complex medical needs. You will provide support both within the classroom and across the wider school environment, helping pupils to develop communication, independence, social and life skills in a safe, nurturing and inclusive setting.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality learning, personal and pastoral support to pupils with complex and additional needs.Provide dedicated 1:1 and small-group support in line with pupils' individual education, health and care plans and support strategies.Support pupils with needs including PMLD, autism, severe learning difficulties, physical disabilities, sensory processing difficulties, communication difficulties and complex medical needs.Support pupils to access the curriculum through appropriate adaptations, resources, communication methods and sensory approaches.Promote pupils' independence and develop their communication, social, personal and life skills.Use appropriate communication strategies and systems, such as visual timetables, symbols, PECS, Makaton or other communication approaches where required.Support pupils with personal care needs, including toileting, changing, feeding and other aspects of personal care where required and in accordance with school policies.Support pupils with mobility and physical needs, following appropriate moving and handling procedures and individual risk assessments.Assist with sensory activities and therapeutic programmes designed to support pupils' physical, emotional and educational development.Support pupils with medical needs in accordance with training, individual healthcare plans and school procedures.Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, therapists, healthcare professionals and other support staff to provide consistent and effective support.Monitor pupils' progress, well-being, communication and engagement, providing clear feedback to teaching staff and relevant professionals.Contribute to the development and review of individual support plans, EHCP outcomes, risk assessments and personal care plans where appropriate.Support pupils during lessons, break times, lunch, transitions, school trips and other aspects of the school day as required.Promote positive behaviour, emotional well-being, confidence, dignity and independence.Maintain accurate and confidential records relating to pupil progress, behaviour, personal care, medical needs and safeguarding.Build positive and professional relationships with pupils, parents/carers, colleagues and external professionals.Follow all safeguarding, health and safety, medical, personal care and confidentiality procedures.Promote safeguarding, inclusion, equality and high expectations for all pupils.Requirements
Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE grade 4/C or Functional Skills).Previous experience working with children or young people with complex needs, SEN or disabilities is highly desirable.Experience supporting pupils with PMLD, autism, physical disabilities, communication difficulties or medical needs.A caring, patient and compassionate approach with the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils.The ability to support pupils with personal care and physical needs in a professional and dignified manner.Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.A willingness to undertake relevant training, including moving and handling, first aid, medical support and communication approaches where required.The ability to remain calm, patient and responsive when supporting pupils with complex or challenging needs.An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is mandatory.
