Resource Description

Your Life skills, transition and work education students will enjoy learning about voting in Australia with this brand new editable slideshow and activities. The language is suited to teens and young adults who prefer simple, easy to read text and engaging activities.

It guides young people through the process of understanding:

  • why people vote in Australia
  • voting rights and responsibilities
  • voting requirements
  • enrolling to vote
  • visiting a voting centre
  • understanding levels of government
  • accessing community voting information
  • what to do - and what not to do at a voting centre
  • how to find information about candidates
  • how to fill out a voting paper

 

The resource does not include specific names of people, parties or political information. It is designed to be used in a non-partisan way to support general learning about voting in Australia and should not be used to influence students in their own voting preferences. Encourage students to discuss voting in a respectful, careful way and to always respect the values and opinions of other people when they are talking about voting, politics and government.

What to do

  1. Introduce voting to your students.
  2. Establish their level of current knowledge, including how many students are enrolled to vote.
  3. Share the slideshow over several lessons, including one or more activities with each lesson.
  4. Include a community based activity such as a visit to a local council building or electorate office if possible, so students see a link between government, politics and their own local community.
  5. Reinforce key messages that are relevant for your students.
  6. Assess learning at the end of the unit by encouraging students to reflect on what they have discovered.
