When the temperature of the road is sufficiently higher than that of the air just above it, refraction bends the light that travels through it, creating a mirage. Australian drivers know it well: it’s the impression of water ahead on the tarmac, never to be reached no matter how far you drive. In many ways, online examinations are the mirage of the education industry. They have appeared before us, seemingly just ahead, for at least five years, yet have never materialised.
