Resume writing and job advertisements pack
Resource Description
Life skills, resource and transition students in middle and senior high school need to build their job seeking skills by learning to:
- write an effective resume
- read and respond to a job advertisement
- work safely in a workplace
In many settings, students need to develop a resume before they participate in work experience, as part of their senior profile or when they begin vocational learning programs.
A good resume helps students find and keep work, but they can be challenging to write, particularly if the student does not have a lot of experience in workplaces.
What's inside?
The bundle of resources includes:
- Sample job advertisements for 6 industries
- Employability skills and resume sample sentences activity
- Task cards and activity on including employability skills in a resume
- High interest, lower text printable handouts to support resume writing for young people who find reading a challenge or are hard to engage
Bonus Files
There are sample job advertisements for hospitality and horticulture which you can use to support students who want to practice writing resumes in response to a specific job.
Once students have developed a high quality resume, they can use it to begin identifying job advertisements which are realistic and relevant for their age and skills.
Common job areas include the food industry, building and construction, horticulture and sport and recreation. Students can practise reading job advertisements, analysing them to find which advertisement is a good fit with their skills and knowledge, and then consider how they would apply for work.
Employability skills are essential and easy to identify in a job advertisement. Teach students to find the key words and then build a resume which includes terms that show the link between their own life activities and their chosen work area. For teens who need a little more support, resume vocabulary cards and sample sentences can help take the hard work out of planning and writing a resume to respond to a job advertisement.
