Position Information

Strathfield South High School is a proudly inclusive comprehensive school with a Support Unit comprising eight Autism classes and four Deaf Education classes. The school enrols approximately 560 students, with around 80% from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Diversity is actively valued and promoted, with the school community working collaboratively to ensure all students develop a strong understanding of and respect for their own cultural identities and those of others.

The school has a well-established tradition of educational excellence, supported by a committed teaching staff that includes highly experienced practitioners alongside early career teachers who contribute contemporary practice and innovation. The School Excellence Plan is underpinned by data-informed decision-making and strong professional collaboration, recognising the interdependence of student learning and wellbeing.

The school is highly regarded within the local community for its commitment to the holistic development of students. Academic achievement is complemented by comprehensive wellbeing structures and a wide range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities, including extensive sporting pathways, creative and performing arts programs, public speaking, leadership initiatives, personal development opportunities, and vocational learning experiences such as the school-based barber shop and hair salon.

A broad and differentiated curriculum is delivered, including a High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program led by highly trained staff. To further strengthen HPGE and practical learning pathways, a $6 million upgrade to Technological and Applied Studies and Creative and Performing Arts facilities is planned, alongside the establishment of a dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering and Robotics laboratory in the next planning period.

The strategic focus for the upcoming planning cycle is to improve student growth and attainment through a strengthened culture of high expectations, supported by consistent, high-impact explicit teaching practices across all learning areas.

Specific Selection Criteria

1. Approval to teach Science 7-10 and Chemistry 11-12. Approved and/or willingness to teach Physics 11-12, with knowledge of assessment, curriculum, and ability to implement scientific inquiry and practical investigations.

2. Capacity to differentiate teaching and learning to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners, including students with additional learning needs and high potential learners, while fostering an inclusive classroom environment that promotes engagement, critical thinking and student achievement.

3. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in the Science faculty, with support staff and parents in contributing towards school and faculty priorities.

 

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
