Hunter School of the Performing Arts (HSPA) is a unique, comprehensive public secondary school located in Newcastle, New South Wales. Catering for approximately 1,100 students from Years 7–12, including 78 students identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, HSPA provides a rich and diverse learning environment where academic excellence is complemented by outstanding opportunities in dance, drama, music and visual arts. The Head Teacher Wellbeing plays a pivotal leadership role in advancing this vision. Working collaboratively with students, families, staff and external agencies, the successful applicant will lead strategic wellbeing initiatives that support student engagement, attendance, learning and positive behaviour. They will champion a proactive and restorative approach to wellbeing, ensuring that all students have access to the support, opportunities and guidance they need to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
Specific Selection Criteria
Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria, applicants should address the following specific criteria:
  1. Demonstrated capacity to strategically lead, establish and operationalise HSPA's first Inclusive Education Support Class, including the implementation of inclusive practices, collaborative case management processes, and wellbeing frameworks that support students with diverse learning, behavioural and support needs within a creative and performing arts school context.
  2. Outstanding ability to lead a diverse student wellbeing team in the design, implementation and evaluation of evidence-informed wellbeing programs and interventions that promote student engagement, belonging, attendance, resilience and success across a diverse secondary school community.
  3. Highly developed interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills, with demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students, families, staff and external agencies to coordinate complex case management, strengthen support networks and enhance student wellbeing outcomes.
  4. Proven capacity to work collaboratively with the executive team, faculties and key stakeholders to lead whole-school initiatives that align with strategic priorities, foster inclusive and positive school culture, and support the academic, social, emotional and creative development of all students.

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
