Reverse Garbage

Excursion / Last updated 4 years, 8 months ago

Reverse Garbage was established in 1974 by a group of educators determined to help the environment by diverting industrial discards from landfill and by reusing materials in their classrooms.

Almost 40 years later, Reverse Garbage is now an internationally recognised, award-winning environmental co-operative committed to promoting sustainability. Each year Reverse Garbage collects tonnes of resources including reusable off-cuts, over-runs, art & craft materials, stage props, knick-knacks, furniture and other items from hundreds of supporting commercial and industrial businesses, as well as through the generosity of the community.

These resources are sorted at Reverse Garbage’s Marrickville site and the community is given the opportunity to purchase items for creative use – or ‘reuse’ – using resources to create new items or to give items a new purpose.

**ReEducate > Reuse Education Workshops**

Suitable for 3-year-olds to adult seniors, Reverse Garbage's reuse education workshops are an opportunity to put the principles of sustainability – and specifically reuse – into practice through engaging, creative, interesting and enjoyable educational activities.

All workshops aim to teach about waste reduction through the reuse of materials and waste minimisation construction techniques (the majority of our workshops are tape and glue free!).

Participants are given an opportunity to develop important problem solving skills in design and construction and are encouraged to learn co-operatively through sharing their skills and discoveries with each other.

RePlay > Utilising Reuse Materials in the Playground

With an increasing focus on sustainability and waste reduction on school comes an increase in the demand to utilise reusable materials and resources in the classroom and playground. Educators and parents are wanting to act ethically and creatively, rather than simply purchasing brand new, off-the-shelf equipment and resources.

**Reverse Garbage’s RG Play service offers:**

- Advice on how to creatively reuse resources in the classroom (e.g. for Arts & Craft) and how ‘everyday’ items provide opportunities in the playground for creativity, team building, problem-solving and engagement.

- Information and training on how to ‘child-proof’ reuse materials.

- The ability to source and provide the ‘raw’ reuse materials to utilise as play equipment.

- Child-proofing of various items and resources, ready-made for schools, an option to ‘top up’ these resources on a regular basis to provide new and engaging items, and delivery (all at additional cost).

Testimonials:

“We had a great time at the workshop. So interesting working with different materials and joining them without glue or sticky tape.  Will definitely start collecting more bits and pieces around the house for our crafting. Thank you for coming.” – Nadia and Eli (4 years), workshop participants.

“Excellent class. Fun and informative.  My son loved making his reuse robot and you have inspired me to create some reuse art myself using plastic bags and your wonderful string making technique. Many thanks!” – Workshop participant parent.

“Thanks Reverse Garbage. You had a great selection of materials and were positive with the creations made by a diverse group of participants.”
