The Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction position is a leadership role dedicated to ensuring that literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills are embedded in curriculum and assessment; high quality teaching practices are enhanced; and the capabilities of middle leaders are strengthened in literacy and numeracy instruction. It shares the broader educational imperatives of the Assistant Principal position but with an explicit focus on the leadership of effective, evidence-based literacy and numeracy teaching and assessment practices for improved student learning outcomes across the curriculum.

The Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction provides high support and guidance to enhance teacher growth and development in literacy and numeracy and strengthens schoolwide instructional capabilities across the curriculum for middle and senior leaders.

Canterbury Public School has a current enrolment of 380. The school celebrates diversity and inclusion and has 62% of students from a non-English speaking background and 4% of students who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.  There are currently 14 mainstream classes and a support unit comprised of five classes for students with a moderate intellectual disability and/or autism.

With a philosophy and motto of Participation, Equity and Excellence, Canterbury provides a curriculum that caters for all students across the wide spectrum of learning including a wealth of extracurricular opportunities as well. The school prides itself on being small enough to know, value and care for every student yet large enough to provide a full range of quality learning and wellbeing programs.

Canterbury's community includes highly supportive and positive families and an enthusiastic and passionate staff committed to continual improvement. Canterbury teachers are collaborative, reflective and learn from and with each other. For the last three years the strategic focus has been on building the capacity of all teaching staff in mathematics education K-6 grounded in research and best practice. Regular and accessible parent workshops helped our community also improve their understanding of how children learn and develop numeracy. As a result, student growth in 2021 exceeded state and SSSG averages for the first time in years. This year we are commencing a similar, sustained professional learning journey with a focus on English K-6. Quality teaching, student engagement and wellbeing, and differentiation to support and challenge all students are our priority. See the school’s website for more information.
