Camp Cypress

Camps and accommodation / Last updated 4 years, 9 months ago

Camp Cypress is located at Baradine in north-west NSW, the gateway to the vast and intriguing Pilliga Forest and is the only school camp facility of this type in the west of the state able to handle large or small groups.

The location of Camp Cypress makes it the ideal place to start an education outside the classroom.

The camp's proximity to the unique Pilliga Forest and the Warrumbungle Mountains provides opportunities for education in the natural sciences, Aboriginal and European history, land management and astronomy, as well as many other activities on offer in the region.

Catering is provided by a full commercial kitchen, and served in an air conditioned dining room with a capacity of more than 120 people. The dining room can also be used as a lecture room.

Educational activities available at Camp Cypress cover a wide choice of topics including a range of the natural sciences as well as geology, astronomy, history, Aboriginal culture, art and agriculture.

Call us and we can put together excursions that suit your students’ interests.

Ranger guided tours in the forest cover the natural sciences, including biodiversity, wildlife, ecology, botany, forest management and geology.

Aboriginal culture and heritage can be experienced by traveling and talking with an Aboriginal ranger.

European history and how past generations lived can be experienced by visiting an old forest saw mill and other sites.

An understanding of astronomy and the vastness of the universe can be gained with a visit to Siding Springs in the Warrumbungle Mountains or to the huge CSIRO’s Australia Telescope, where six 22-metre diameter dishes search the distant sky.

Back at camp a view of the night sky through high powered telescopes can be enjoyed under the guidance of a qualified astronomer.

You could also visit an Emu farm, talk to the Emus and see all the products that come from them.

Accommodation consists of four cabins, each with four air-conditioned, en suite bedrooms sleeping up to six people per room. Each cabin also has a common room with fridge, TV and kitchen area. There is also bunkhouse style accommodation for up to 40 people as well as a large camping area. These accommodations are serviced by separate male and female shower blocks.

At our largest combined schools annual camp we accommodate and feed more than 110 mixed age children.
