Functional reading with health and wellness for teens
Resource Description
Health literacy is a vital area of skill development, and research tells us that many young people and adults in our community lack the ability to safely and effectively manage their own health. In many developed countries, only around half the adult population have the health literacy skills they need to manage their own health care.
Students who are learning English as an additional language and students who have lower levels of general literacy in reading, writing, speaking and listening are particularly at risk of having low health literacy skills.
Being health literate ensures that people are able to:
- manage medication
- seek assistance and advice
- identify emergencies
- participate in conversations about their health
- follow medical directions.
Students need practise in using health related vocabulary and being able to use words and phrases correctly in written text and in speaking and listening tasks.
This Teen Health Literacy Pack focuses on:
- Speaking skills
- Listening Skills
- Reading comprehension
- Health vocabulary
- Community awareness
- Problem solving
- Planning and organizing skills
- Spelling and Grammar skills
- Online research
- Reading graphs
The printables are suitable for use in ESL / EFL, FACS, Life Skills, VCAL. Work Education and Transition programs.
