Your art and visual communications students in junior and middle high school will love getting outdoors for some practical skills with this fun, no-prep digital photography scavenger hunt. All you need to do is print or share the pages with your students and send them out to explore their local settings with their digital device or camera.

The photography scavenger hunt activity has been fully updated and revised, and includes 18 pages with 7 photography topics, planning page, annotation pages for each topic, instructions for the teacher and students and a reflection page.

Taking photos is a great way to build some creativity and give students the opportunity to express their ideas through a medium which is engaging, easy to use and requires minimal equipment. The scavenger hunt is perfect for students at a range of levels, including those who have little experience in taking photos. The task can be completed in a single session or extended to include planning, display and reflection stages, depending on your own class program and student learning needs.

• Plan a series of photos based on a simple brief

Here’s how:

Introduce the scavenger hunt by explaining that students will be using a device or camera to take photos based on a chosen brief. You may choose to group students into topic areas, or allow them to choose the one which interests them.

Provide time for students to plan their photos using the ‘My photo ideas’ page.

Ensure students are able to take their photos in a safe, supervised area, using the checklist for their scavenger hunt topic.

Encourage students to display their photos creatively, either using a slideshow or pasting them onto the annotations page and making notes about their photos. Students can complete the reflection page at the end of the activity to share what they have learnt and nominate their favourite photo.
