Surprising study finds Year 3 low-achievers do not continue to fall behind peers
The widespread understanding that students who hit Year 3 with poor literacy and numeracy skills will only fall further behind their peers over time is a ‘cultural belief’ that’s not always found in research – or indeed in NAPLAN data – one academic has warned.
Dr Sally Larsen told EducationHQ that the Matthew Effect, a phenomenon whereby gaps in academic progress widen over time, had become a deep-rooted assumption spurred on by the media and influential science books.
