Parents in prison - how educators can help their children
Countless numbers of children across the world attend school every day carrying the same guilty secret. The secret is so great that a parent or grandparent will have made them promise never to tell anyone at school or their friends as the revelation could bring deep shame on the family; yet the child hasn't done anything wrong. The weight of this secret may make them become isolated in the playground, distracted in class or act out in ways untypical of them. To compound their confusion one of the most important adults in their life will be missing, this is why it is crucial for schools to be able to support the pupils who have a parent in prison.
Not only will having a parent in prison have a massive impact on the short term issues for a child; missing emotional support, a primary care giver and financial stability; these children are also more likely to be imprisoned themselves.
