Out-of-field maths teaching runs rampant in Australian schools
The latest TIMSS report, the second volume analysing 2019’s data, found that nearly a quarter of Australian Year 8 students were taught maths by a teacher without a major in either mathematics or mathematics teaching – in other words, an out-of-field teacher.
Even exceptional teachers can only perform at their best when they understand their subject’s content.
