Our maths incompetency doesn't add up

“Mathematical competence is enabling” – we might quibble about the meaning of ‘competence’ but the statement, almost a platitude, has wide public and professional acceptance.

Flip it and we are suddenly confronted with: “mathematical incompetence is disabling”.
