New common practice mandate draws praise and fierce criticism
Teachers will soon be required to adhere to a new common practice model for teaching reading, writing and maths, the Ministry of Education has announced.
While Minister of Education Jan Tinetti says the mandate aims to create more consistency across schools, Post Primary Teachers Association acting president Chris Abercrombie says legislating how teachers should teach literacy and numeracy “is a slippery slope and sets a worrying precedent”.
