They’re itching to cut loose, sing, shout, make some noise – and make some real, live friends! Remote learning has meant they’ve missed out on all those bonding extracurricular activities like excursions and workshops, and it’s been rough.

So now it’s time to ramp up the fun, get creative and make some connections at MEGAMIX Social. This is a free program of world-class performing arts experiences at Arts Centre Melbourne and you can access fully subsidised tickets throughout 2022. We’re talking live music, dance, theatre, circus, tours and workshops for Primary and Secondary School students and their teachers. Check out the program and book the sessions that suit your class schedules.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take your students to one of the world’s great arts institutions and let them get completely immersed in creative, exciting activities (many with curriculum links and teacher resources). It’s great for their mental health and you never know what talents they might uncover or what lifelong friends they might make when they’re doing a theatre workshop or exploring the Australian Music Vault. Australia’s next great superstar might be one of your students…

What’s on?

The program brings together some of the country’s most incredible artists, tutors and performers to present a range of strange, funny, thought-provoking, unexpected and totally transporting experiences.

Kaleidoscope is a stunning maze of mirrors, suited to students in years 4 – 8. Situated on the Arts Centre Melbourne forecourt, students will enter a doorway to a reflective hidden world that gives then space to explore, contemplate and dream.

William Barton: Sky Songs gives students a front row seat to the magic of multi-instrumentalist William Barton, accompanied by John Foreman’s 60-piece Aussie Pops Orchestra. Sky Songs is a dreamy and powerful piece that reflects on the deep past, the Australian landscape and the magic of the cosmos. William Barton is one of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players, and to hear such an instrument backed by an orchestra in Hamer Hall is a real ear-opener.

There’s even more orchestra on the menu, this time with a side of film, at Sounds of the Screen. Orchestra Victoria will perform scores from movies filmed in Victoria, composed by Australians, drawing on how music and landscape intertwine. They’ll play music from movies like Ali’s Wedding, The Dressmaker, Picnic at Hanging Rock and wild pieces from Mad Max.

After a sell-out season at Sydney Festival last year, Dorr-e Dari is having its Melbourne premier and you and your students can see it first, right here. This theatre piece combines storytelling and ballads of love, human connection and Persian culture. Dorr-e Dari was created by PYT Fairfield, Western Sydney’s leading theatre company for young artists.

If you have students with a musical streak, check out Music Unlocked. The Music Unlocked program features three music workshops that take place in the Arts Centre Melbourne’s dedicated learning facility, The Channel – Hip-Hop Lyric Writing, Household Techno and Into the Music.

These workshops are paired with a visit to the Australian Music Vault, an immersive exhibition all about Australian contemporary music. MEGAMIX Social Australian Music Vault Facilitators will make Australian music history come alive, with digital experiences, rare archival footage and iconic music objects.
