In less enlightened times, control was something which was externally imposed on children in the classroom and at home through a brutal combination of raised voices, unsuppressed anger and physical violence.

Suitably cowed, children turned into adults willing to accept being cannon fodder in battle, or factory stooges who would endure appalling ...
