Arrant nonsense. For a sensible, nuanced and scientifically valid view see Daisy Christodoulou: https://daisychristodoulou.com/2023/02/if-we-are-setting-assessments-that-a-robot-can-complete-what-does-that-say-about-our-assessments/ "In order for students to successfully grapple with problems computers cannot do, they must work through problems that computers can do". And BTW, schooling is one of the great success stories of our time - worldwide literacy rates are phenomenal. (And no, CHATGPT didn't write this!).

Such strong critical sentiment of the supposed failings of current assessment practices but not a single actual example of assessment failing. What is this "deep meaning" that Popenici thinks essay assessment fundamentally lack? Meaning is encoded in language (i.e. syntax, grammar, punctuation, words and their amount). What, then, is "deep" meaning? If we're going to use linguistics as the main point of critique, then let's actually talk linguistics. An intriguing title for the article but the content was poorly presented.
