The new offering includes guides and videos of practice that align with AERO’s Model of Learning and Teaching, along with implementation resources that provide school leaders with guidance on how to effectively adopt evidence-based teaching practices at scale across a school.
Dr Jenny Donovan, CEO of AERO, emphasised the importance of both elements in lifting outcomes.
"We know that evidence-based teaching practices have a significant impact on improving student outcomes. However, to get the most student benefit out of the practices, schools need a deliberate and structured approach to implementation.
"These new resources provide another expansion to AERO's free resource toolkit for schools. The video resources show real teachers using evidence-based practices in diverse Australian classroom settings, while new practice guides on planning, cultural safety and family engagement add to our guidance on effective instruction," Donovan said.
The new teaching resources cover key areas such as instruction, gradual release, planning and enabling.
The expanded suite also includes seven practice-focused videos and four lesson videos demonstrating how these practices work together to maximise learning.
Developed and trialled via AERO's Learning Partner Project, the organisation says the resources aim to help schools transition from simply understanding best practices to consistently and effectively implementing them across all year levels.
"We have drawn on key ideas from implementation research to develop an approach that can help schools to transform good ideas and enthusiasm into tangible improved outcomes for students," Donovan added.
Also included is a professional learning module, materials for developing a school implementation plan, and guidance on how to address implementation enablers and barriers. These build on resources released in August last year.
Stephanie Le Lievre, principal at Serpentine Primary School in WA, said she was thrilled to see instructional videos filmed at her school featured in the new resources.
"Very excited to see these new practice guides and videos up today on Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO)," she posted on LinkedIn.
"Serpentine PS have videos of our lessons throughout (of 4 classes) including one totally uninterrupted sequence of our Year 2 Daily Review by our phenomenal graduate teacher, Polly Anderson. I’m also in there somewhere doing a lesson on appositives 🙃."
One video, for example, features a Year 2 literacy lesson at Serpentine demonstrating how evidence-aligned teaching practices are integrated into a fast-paced daily review.
“In this lesson, you’ll see a review of content taught in previous lessons using a variety of question and task types, as well as a variety of participation routines,” the resource reads.
“Student knowledge is organised through the use (of) visual and verbal representations integrated into the review. You’ll notice that the pace of the review is made possible due to the well-established rules and routines in the classroom.”
Marita Fox, primary learning leader at St Elizabeth's Catholic School in Queensland, has also backed AERO's resources.
“Going through the implementation process of integrating these new resources into our teaching practice really opened our eyes - our use of the 'Enablers and Barriers' resource really assisted in focusing our work.
"We’ve seen significant improvements in classroom engagement," Fox reported.
