A heuristic approach to a situation is often useful, as it uses previous experience to manage the situation. However, when the situation changes the heuristic approach may not be so useful. It may lead to failure to cope or chaos.

A flexible approach is the mark of a person who is able to cope with unexpected happenings and be able to overcome them. It is the mark of a good teacher.
