About the Role:

This role is based in the Metropolitan North Regional Offices (North Lakes and Nundah) and the Childrens Courts across the Brisbane and Moreton Bay areas. As the Youth Transition Officer you will build strong relationships with young people and families who may be involved or at risk of being involved in the Youth Justice System.

The Youth Transition Officer works closely with Court Liaison Officers and other regional staff involved in student engagement and re-engagement. Key to the role will be your ability to develop a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, policy and procedure across education and youth justice contexts, including operation of the Childrens Court and multi-agency collaborative forums. This knowledge, alongside strong connections to alternative educational providers, experience in working collaboratively with state school leadership teams, and an enhanced ability to assess young people's educational and support needs, and to scaffold their reintegration into an appropriate education pathway.

Evidenced experience in working with families that are Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander and, more broadly, culturally diverse will be important in your daily work.

As the Youth Transition Officer you will:

  • Liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders including alternative education providers, training organisations and community organisations, providing a departmental perspective.
  • Refer young people, including those with minimal required intervention, and those with high complex educational needs, to avenues for direct support/advocacy.
  • Develop an education plan to support a young person to transition into a suitable educational pathway in consultation with the young person, their family, Child Safety, Youth Justice and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure privacy and confidentiality requirements are adhered to so that information obtained from young people and families and departmental information systems is used within legislative and policy requirements.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to assist with young people's re-engagement in educational pathways.
