Job Title: General Teaching Assistant (Year 5/6)

Location: Lancaster

Start Date: October 2024

Contract Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 32.5 hours per week.

Job Purpose:

To support the class teacher in delivering high-quality education to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils by providing assistance in classroom activities, small group work, and individual student support. The role involves working closely with the teacher to ensure all pupils, including those with special educational needs, are given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

Classroom Support:

  • Assist the class teacher in preparing resources and materials for lessons.
  • Support pupils in understanding lesson content, providing extra help where needed.
  • Help manage classroom behaviour in line with the school's policy.
  • Supervise students during lessons, activities, and transitions between lessons.
  • One-to-One or Group Support:

  • Provide tailored support to individual students, including those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), to help them access the curriculum.
  • Work with small groups of students to improve literacy, numeracy, and other core subjects.
  • Implement SATS interventions to Year 6 pupils and support strategies designed by the teacher.
  • Assessment and Feedback:

  • Assist the teacher in monitoring and assessing students' progress.
  • Provide feedback to students on their work, helping them understand their progress and areas for improvement.
  • Maintain records of students' progress as directed by the teacher.
  • Classroom Environment:

  • Help to create a positive and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Ensure that classroom displays are updated regularly to reflect ongoing learning.
  • Pastoral Support:

  • Offer pastoral care to students, providing emotional and social support when necessary.
  • Support students during break times and other non-classroom activities.
  • Administrative Tasks:

  • Assist with general classroom administrative tasks such as photocopying, preparing resources, and organizing materials.
  • Help manage equipment and resources in the classroom.
  • Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to offer encouragement to students.
  • An understanding of child development and the specific needs of Year 5/6 pupils.
  • Ability to manage behaviour positively and in accordance with school policies.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Qualifications and Experience:

    Essential:

  • Relevant experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting.
  • A good standard of general education
  • A Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning).
  • Desirable:

  • Previous experience working with pupils in KS2
  • Working Hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 32.5hours per week - term time only
