About this job

Position Information

Lord Howe Island Central School is located approximately 600 kilometres off the NSW mid-north coast, making it the most remote school in N.S.W. We directly cater for the teaching and learning of all students on the island from Kindergarten to Year 6, and in conjunction with Camden Haven High School Distance Education, we support secondary students on the island from Years 7-12. In 2024 the school has 42 students across K-6 and has a Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) of 53.

Three permanent staff are appointed to the island on limited tenure contracts (2 years with possible extension to a maximum of 4 years). A focus is on using technology to make connections nationally and globally to reduce isolation and building on existing educational programs that utilise the natural assets of Lord Howe Island.

Learning at Lord Howe Island Central School is enriched with strong community partnerships through the Lord Howe Island Marine Park, the Lord Howe Island Museum and the programs provided by the Lord Howe Island Board to preserve Lord Howe Island as a World Heritage Site. Students actively participate in a range of community events and our school enjoys a high level of support from the parent and wider island community.

The school community is a blend of families whose history is closely linked to the island and families who live and work here for a contracted period. Lord Howe Island is a tourist-based economy and has approximately 400 permanent residents and a maximum of 400 tourists at any one time, ensuring the island's unique natural balance is preserved.

  4. Outstanding communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with the demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with students, parents/carers, staff, and the wider community.
  5. Proven ability to improve student wellbeing outcomes by building and nurturing a positive school culture and sense of belonging for all.
  6. Demonstrated capacity to be an active member of the school community, with the ability to implement and coordinate whole school programs and/or extra-curricular activities (such as public speaking, music, dance or sport), as well as taking on other responsibilities (such as Student Representative or School Councils) to strengthen school culture and sense of community.
