Position Information
Rutherford Public School is a large, vibrant and inclusive K–6 school located within the Maitland Principal Network on the land of the Wonnarua People. In 2026, the school has an enrolment of approximately 1,035 students from diverse backgrounds, with 21% of students identifying as Aboriginal. Our modern, purpose-built library, upgraded in 2021, is an important hub for reading, learning and connection. It provides an extensive collection of quality literature and learning resources, alongside technology including computers and robotics. All classes participate in weekly library lessons, while whole-school initiatives including Book Week, author visits, book fairs, the Premier’s Reading Challenge, National Simultaneous Storytime and student library monitors promote a strong culture of reading across the school.
We are seeking a collaborative and enthusiastic Teacher Librarian who will build upon these strengths and continue to develop the library as an engaging, innovative and welcoming centre for reading, learning, creativity and connection across our school.
Specific Selection Criteria
Approval to teach Library (Primary) or currently undertaking or currently enrolled in Teacher Librarian qualifications approved by the NSW Department of Education
Demonstrated ability to lead and support high-quality teaching and learning, with a strong focus on literacy, information literacy, research skills and the effective integration of digital technologies across K–6.
Demonstrated capacity to lead and manage a contemporary, engaging school library, with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents/carers and the wider school community.
Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
If you are new or returning to the Department of Education and have relevant prior professional experience, you can submit a Salary determination for classroom teachers application form to request a salary determination. Until the outcome of any such determination is confirmed, your salary offer will remain at Step 1 then be updated at a later date (typically a 1–2 week processing time post receipt of the form). Special Notes
If applicable, engagement will be temporary until successful completion of the Teacher Librarian qualifications as recognised by the NSW Department of Education which must be completed within 24 months.
