Position Information

James Meehan High School is a community-based comprehensive secondary school with a population of approximately 406 students situated at Macquarie Fields. The school is culturally diverse, with 29 cultural groups represented across 27 language backgrounds. 50% of students have a language background other than English. 32% of students are from a Pacific Islander background, while another 14% are from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background. 

The school provides the opportunity to engage students from low socio-economic status communities through a variety of high-quality programs including literacy development, student support, technology and quality teaching. Strong welfare programs and community involvement include proactive links with the Pacific Islander and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. A Special Education Unit consists of 6 classes which serves the needs of students with intellectual and emotional disabilities and autism. 

Specific Selection Criteria
  1. Approval to teach careers, or currently undertaking or currently enrolled in the Careers Adviser qualifications approved by the New South Wales Department of Education (Refer special note below), with the ability to provide informed guidance on university entry, early entry programs, and various career pathways, particularly for students with complex needs.
  2. Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the wider community, including the ability to engage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. 
  3. Proven ability to design, implement, and manage career development programs, including VET, TVET, SBAT, and structured work experience, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with student needs. 
  4. Demonstrated capacity to develop and coordinate support services that empower students to define, explore, and achieve their career goals, with a particular focus on creating effective transition solutions for students with complex and high needs. 
Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

 

 

Special Notes

If applicable, engagement will be temporary until successful completion of the Teacher Careers qualifications as recognised by the NSW Department of Education which must be completed within 12 months.
