About Us:
Deaf and hard of hearing services (DHHS) as part of the Department of Education Statewide Services branch provides support to schools with students who use Auslan as well as direct support to identified Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students who require Auslan for language development and learning.
Your Role:
As a teacher aide: Auslan language model (TA:ALM), you will work with schools supporting DHH students who use Auslan to develop language, communication, cultural identity, and to improve educational outcomes. You will liaise with school staff including the classroom teacher, teacher of the Deaf (ToD), Principal advisor: Auslan (PAA) and school leadership (e.g. Principal, Deputy Principal, Business Manager)
Responsibilities include:
- Monitor student understanding, unpack vocabulary, contexts and concepts simply and clearly to match the language level of the student/s.
- Demonstrate the value of English literacy (reading and writing) and build a positive self-identity through role modelling, sharing insights/experiences as a Deaf person (when appropriate) as part of the Deaf community
- Model the use of signing in Auslan and signing in English word order to demonstrate the value of each language in developing English literacy (reading and writing).
- Delivery of appropriate programs under the direction of the teacher of the Deaf and class teacher
- Support class teachers and teachers of the deaf by preparing materials designed for deaf/hard of hearing students e.g. Auslan translation of story books, reading stimulus materials, Auslan translation of assessment/classroom/homework tasks.
About You:
Suitable applicants will demonstrate English literacy and strong Auslan skills. Ideally with experience in the education sector and/or involvement in the Deaf community. An ability to work with and facilitate communication with schools and staff who do not use Auslan. Team focussed and willing to build and maintain positive working relationships with school staff.
