About Us:

Deaf and hard of hearing services (DHHS) as part of the Department of Education Statewide Services branch provides support to schools with students who use Auslan as well as direct support to identified Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students who require Auslan for language development and learning. 

Your Role:

As a teacher aide: educational interpreter (TA:EI), you will monitor student comprehension to match the language level of the student/s when interpreting and understand when to unpack concepts further. Support DHH students to build confidence, independence, and a positive sense of well-being through various advocacy both in and outside of the classroom environment.

Liaise with and support positive working relationships between school staff (Deaf and hearing) including the classroom teacher, teacher of the Deaf (ToD), Principal advisor: Auslan (PAA) and school leadership (e.g. Principal, Deputy Principal (DP), Business Manager) and teacher aide: Auslan language model (TA:ALM).

Responsibilities include:

  1. Maintain clear and effective communication between students and teachers at all times, both in and outside the classroom, to match the language level and needs of our diverse DHH students,  ensuring the use of appropriate interpreting strategies to unpack vocabulary, contexts, and concepts.
  2. Provide oral interpretation when a deaf or hard of hearing student uses sign language to communicate with the class, in small group settings, or during one-on-one conversations with another student or the teacher.
  3. Assist the deaf or hard of hearing student in comprehending and engaging with the educational program through teacher-directed tutoring, ensuring understanding of the curriculum. This includes checking for comprehension, clarifying difficult vocabulary, and explaining homework instructions.
  4. Prepare in advance for interpretation by reviewing relevant materials such as lesson and teacher notes, understanding the intent of the teaching and curriculum focus in each session.
  5. Seek assistance for appropriate sign choice and unpacking difficult/unknown concepts from Deaf staff (e.g. teacher aide: Auslan language model) and lesson focus from the classroom teacher. 

About You:

Suitable applicants will demonstrate English literacy and strong Auslan skills, initiative and passion for ensuring DHH students engage in learning, develop strong language and literacy skills. 

Ideally with experience in the education sector and/or involvement in the Deaf community. 

Have an ability to work with DHH students and Deaf staff to facilitate communication within schools for staff and students who do not use Auslan. Team focussed and willing to build and maintain positive working relationships.
