Position: Student Support Worker

Location: Kirklees, West Yorkshire

Contract Type: Temporary -Term Time Only

Hours: Full-Time (Monday-Friday -8:30am-3:30pm)

Salary: £85-£95 a day

Start Date: September 2024

Veritas Education are working with a vibrant and inclusive special school in Kirklees. The school is committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for the students. The students have a range of needs including learning difficulties, Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the class teacher to support the learning and development of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Provide one-to-one or small group support, adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere, ensuring all students feel valued and supported.
  • Follow Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to meet the student's needs and ensure progress.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as physio therapists and the nursing team.
  • Assist with personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and mobility, always ensuring dignity and respect.
  • Communicate with the student's using PECS, Makaton, and British Sign Language.
  • Interact with the children throughout the school day and assist on the playground.
  • Be confident with behaviour management and de-escalation strategies (Level 2 Team Teach).
  • Be a fantastic role model and encourage positive behaviour.
  • Be comfortable and confident supporting children with complex SEN and medical needs.
  • Requirements:

  • Proven experience supporting adults and/or children with SEN/complex needs is essential.
  • Personal experience supporting a family member with SEN/SEMH is also valued.
  • Level 2 Team Teach is essential, although this training can be offered by Veritas.
  • Safeguarding training is essential, although this training can be offered by Veritas.
  • A moving and handling qualification is preferred.
  • GCSE English and Maths is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of SEN is essential.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and patience are crucial. The ability to handle challenging situations with calm and professionalism is a must.
  • A dedication to improving the lives of students with complex needs and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to adapt to the varying needs of students and the school environment.
  • Candidates must hold or be willing to apply for an enhanced DBS upon registration.
  • Have proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
