Position Information

Picnic Point High School co-educational comprehensive school in Sydney with approximately 860 students in 2026. Located on Kennedy Street, it offers a diverse curriculum with strong performing arts, sports, and inclusive education for Years 7-12. The school focuses on student well-being and community partnership; promoting a "known, valued, and cared for" philosophy based on respect, responsibility, and participation. 28% of students come from language backgrounds other than English, and 4% identify as Aboriginal. The school includes an Inclusive Education Unit with four support classes.

The Intensive Learning Support (Mental Health) Teacher provides specialised support for students with diagnosed mental health conditions. They deliver a differentiated mainstream curriculum tailored to students with normal cognitive ability but complex emotional needs. The Intensive Learning Support (Mental Health) Teacher will work collaboratively; developing, implementing, and monitoring Personalised Learning and Support Plans that address both academic and mental health goals. The Teacher will apply trauma-informed, strengths-based, and restorative practices to create a safe, caring environment that builds a student's capacity to self-regulate. They will work with the School counsellors, Staff and external health professionals to provide ongoing support for both students and their families. 

Specific Selection Criteria
  1. Approval to teach Special Education and/or experience with working with students with trauma and/or complex mental health conditions.
  2. Proven ability to develop, implement and review Individualised Mental Health Plans, Personalised Learning and Support Plans and Behaviour Response Plans - in accordance with mental wellbeing.
  3. Highly developed classroom management skills with the capacity to support learning; through modelling and explicit teaching.
  4. Knowledge of, implementation and commitment to the department aboriginal education policies.

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
