About the Department:

These social work positions are part of the Department of Education's commitment to the Wellbeing Workforce which provides evidence based therapeutic intervention to students and their families. The position focuses on providing targeted mental health interventions and enhanced wellbeing supports to students and their families with mild to moderate mental health concerns.

About the role:

As a social worker in the Metropolitan South Region, you will work across various school sites and be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team at the school level. Your responsibilities will include offering counselling, conducting assessments, and implementing interventions focused on students' mental health and overall wellbeing. You will also have the opportunity to help develop, implement, and evaluate programs and interventions designed to boost student engagement and participation in school.

The vacancies are in schools located in both Brisbane South, Brisbane West, Ipswich, including small schools in the outer Ipswich area, Laidley District, and Redland Bay including the Moreton Islands. Most vacancies are in primary school settings, but experience in supporting young adults / teenagers is also highly valued. There are also a number of vacancies across both special schools and special purpose schools in the Brisbane South area. Candidates with a strong interest and knowledge in working with children and families in the disability sector are highly encouraged to apply. There is the potential for full time or part time work options to successful applicants.

Responsibilities include:

  • Using professional knowledge of psychological interventions and treatments to deliver appropriate and tailored therapeutic intervention to support students' mild to moderate concerns, including:
    • Mental health concerns including anxiety, depression.
    • Personal relationships
    • Stress
    • Trauma and crisis.
  • Providing support and ensure safety plans for the school context are implemented for students who are self-harming and/or at risk of suicide.
  • Applying understanding of the mental health continuum to identify when students require additional mental health support outside of the school context.
  • Understanding of the mental health system to provide students who need additional support for their mental health concerns with warm referrals to external agencies.
  • Supporting students following a critical incident or emergency, ensuring their wellbeing is monitored and supported.
  • With student permission, work with other wellbeing and school staff to ensure strategies developed for the student can be put in place in the classroom and the wider school community.
