About this job

SEN Teaching Assistant (Maternity Cover)

Garstang Area | Full-Time | Term Time Only Start Date: Monday 2nd November 2026 (Potential for an Earlier Start with Handover Days Available) 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract

Veritas Education are working in partnership with a welcoming and supportive primary school in the Garstang area who are seeking an experienced and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team on a 12-month maternity cover contract.

Due to the rural location of the school, candidates must be drivers with access to their own transport.

This is primarily a general Teaching Assistant role within a KS2 classroom. However, the successful candidate will be supporting pupils with a diverse range of special educational needs and learning profiles, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and social, emotional and behavioural needs.

The school is looking for someone who can provide strong classroom support, work closely alongside the class teacher, and help ensure all pupils are engaged, supported, and able to achieve their potential.

The hours are Monday to Friday, term time only, 0830-1530.

The Role:

  • Supporting teaching and learning within a KS2 classroom
  • Working with pupils with a range of SEN, including autism, ADHD and behavioural needs
  • Providing both one-to-one and small group support where required
  • Assisting the class teacher with classroom management and lesson delivery
  • Helping to create an inclusive and positive learning environment
  • Building positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents
  • The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has previous experience working in a classroom setting (essential)
  • Has experience supporting children with SEN
  • Demonstrates excellent behaviour management and communication skills
  • Is patient, adaptable and proactive in their approach
  • Can work effectively as part of a team and support the class teacher
  • Holds a relevant TA qualification (desirable)
  • Is a driver with access to their own vehicle due to the school's location
  • What the School Offers:

  • A supportive and welcoming staff team
  • Well-established SEN support structures
  • Opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils' development
  • Potential handover and shadowing days before the official start date
  • A long-term role offering stability throughout the academic year
  • This position is due to commence on Monday 2nd November 2026, although an earlier start date can be accommodated to allow for a thorough handover and transition period.
