About this job

About Us:

The lifestyle in Mount Isa is family friendly; it is a vibrant city with an outback community feel. You will fall in love with the natural splendour of the North West Queensland region, the experience of a rural/urban community and the opportunity to make a real and positive difference... and want to stay.
Once a raw frontier town built in the heart of North West Queensland around the vast mineral resources, Mount Isa has grown into a thriving industrial and commercial centre renowned for its friendly and welcoming nature.
Affectionately known as the ‘oasis of the outback,' Mount Isa represents over 50 nationalities which give the city a unique cosmopolitan flavour. People enjoy living in this modern community, with restaurants, excellent health care, shopping, churches, clubs, service clubs and social activities. You will love the yearly carnival of festivities and celebrations including the Mount Isa Rodeo.
The Traditional Owners of the area are the Kalkadoon people.

Our Team:
The Student Wellbeing Package will ensure every Queensland primary and secondary state school student has access to a wellbeing professional at school.
Our team was created due to students in Queensland experiencing mental health concerns at increased rates and levels of complexity. Schools needed to be equipped to respond appropriately to students' mental health concerns.
To support Queensland state schools and their students, the number of wellbeing professionals working in schools increased over 3 years as part of the Queensland Government's $106.7 million Student Wellbeing Package. We are now a multi-disciplinary team of professionals:

  • psychologists
  • guidance officers (with a counselling focus)
  • social workers
  • youth workers.

About the Role:

The focus of the role is to provide therapeutic support for students with mild to moderate mental health concerns based in Mount Isa. Wellbeing professionals employed through the Student Wellbeing Package work as part of schools' established student support teams to enhance the wellbeing and mental health support available to students. This is a dynamic, school-based role and there are opportunities to provide service through a tele-practice mode and flexibility to working arrangements dependent on the needs of the school's population. Some of our positions bring opportunity for travel and outreach to rural and remote settings to support our most vulnerable communities in the North Queensland region. Our roles involve supporting more than one school in the region.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to;

  • Provide professional support and information to students, parents, carers and school communities that facilitate partnerships in decision making for the enhancement of all students learning
  • Operate in an advisory and advocacy capacity providing professional services specific to the psychology work discipline.
  • Respond to the needs of the student population and school community to provide assessment, personal counselling and family counselling, and group work.
  • Facilitation of early intervention supports such as for referrals to other allied health professionals, and service and care coordination for the purpose of assisting student's wellbeing and mental health.

Please refer to the attached role description for any mandatory requirements for this position.

How to apply:

  • Please submit a brief resume including contact details for 2 referees (referees should have an understanding of your relevant previous work history); and
  • A 2-pg written statement in response to the attached role description.
