Your Opportunity

Be part of the North Coast Region Partnerships and Programs First Nations Education team as a Principal Advisor - Indigenous EAL/D, based in either Bundaberg, Maryborough or Maroochydore.

As the Principal Advisor, Indigenous English as an Additional Language or Dialect (IEAL/D) you will be responsible in assisting schools and the region with aligning the department's educational strategies, K - 12 framework and the Australian Curriculum through a whole school approach to IEAL/D. This includes system aligned targeted professional learning, resources and advice to support the implementation of evidence based IEAL/D practices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander EAL/D learners. This role focuses on improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students by strengthening culturally responsive teaching and learning across early childhood and state schooling settings

Roles and responsibilities

You will work alongside schools to strengthen curriculum implementation and teacher capability by:

  • Leading the implementation of the Indigenous EAL/D Queensland Department of Education Roadmap across the North Coast Region
  • Build regional and school capability in second language acquisition and additional language learning and their implications for the Australian Curriculum through targeted professional learning that strengthens EAL/D strategies, evidence informed practice and differentiation.
  • Building capability in differentiation and effective teaching strategies that support student learning
  • Lead and build the capability of individual and whole school support in the identification, assessment and reporting of Standard Australian English (SAE) language learning needs of all Indigenous EAL/D learners' across the curriculum using the department's Bandscales.
  • Build and support curriculum leaders designated school-based coaches and teachers identified staff and teachers with the teaching of Indigenous EAL/D learners by identifying the SAE language demands of tasks, texts and interactions, and identifying targeted language teaching, resources and strategies to help learners meet the demands of the curriculum in a whole class context.
  • Model high quality teaching practices focused on the achievement of Indigenous EAL/D learners by using evidence based and system approved EAL/D pedagogy.
  • Build personal relationships with local knowledge support which promotes an understanding of factors that influence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language ecologies in the region, and the linguistic repertoires of families and students, and promote the ethos of the State Schools Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages Statement.
