About The Team

This regionally based position will report to and be supported by the Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services (Auslan) in developing and implementing a cohesive service that maximises student outcomes.

About The Role

As the Principal Advisor, Auslan you will have responsibility for the following:

  • Support schools in using Auslan in the delivery of quality educational programs of deaf and hearing impaired students.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching assistance to school teams and class teachers in the use of Auslan and bilingual pedagogy.
  • Improve and enhance pedagogical practice for teachers by researching and modelling quality teaching and learning programs for deaf students.
  • Improve the capacity of class teachers to use evidence based practice, including sign language assessment, to inform. programming for students.
  • Coordinate support and training regarding the use of Auslan and bilingual pedagogy for class teachers, special educators, Teacher Aides (Educational Interpreter - Auslan and Language Model - Auslan), and Advisory Visiting Teachers for Hearing Impairment.
  • Provide advice regarding regional teacher aide allocations to support students using Auslan.
  • Assist schools with recruitment processes for Teacher Aides (Educational Interpreter - Auslan and Language Model - Auslan), in line with the Auslan Language Model and departmental Special Education Programs.
  • Provide opportunities and support for Teacher Aides (Educational Interpreter - Auslan and Language Model - Auslan) in the areas of professional and personal skills development.
