About the role

Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) is committed to reconciliation and creating an equitable education system and workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. We have a strong commitment to Community, growing our Ngutana-Lui Cultural Studies Centre since the 1980s, a dedicated facility designed to educate our students, teachers and employees understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures, Story, Histories and Peoples.

As Manager of this centre, you will be responsible for ensuring that Ngutana-Lui fulfils its purpose to build cultural competency among BCE teachers and employees, to teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in a unique classroom setting within the Brisbane Archdiocese, while growing the offerings of the centre to extend offerings to the broader community. You will manage the centre to continue to deliver existing programs while creating new opportunities to further grow centre offerings.

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education your success will be defined by your ability to:

  • Plan and manage the operations of and educational offerings of the Cultural Centre.
  • Provide a source of educational leadership in developing and delivering professional learning programs that build cultural competency among BCE employees, with a priority focus on teachers and school staff.
  • Align the cultural studies programs with the Australian curriculum.
  • Provide specialised support for the development, coordination and delivery of responsive services, programs, resources, professional development, and initiatives in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
  • Contribute to strategic priorities within the centre’s annual plan.
  • Promote reconciliation, develop cultural understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
  • Partner with community groups and other external organisations to provide a source of cultural knowledge and expertise to support the mission of Brisbane Catholic Education.
  • Develop and deliver educational and visitation programs and services provided by the Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre including evaluation of cultural competence/awareness programs, suitable for internal and external participants; and grow the offerings available to broaden the reach of the centre.
  • Effectively manage a team, providing operational supervision and facilitating team communications, program planning, skill development (professional learning) and effective issue management to maximise service delivery.

About you - you will bring to the role:

  • dedication to educating children, with a strong commitment to child safety, combined with a focus on business development. Current registration as a Teacher with the Queensland College of Teachers required.
  • relevant tertiary Business Management and education qualifications i.e. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, or a relevant field.
  • demonstrated success in teaching and educational leadership to deliver outcomes.
  • effective interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • professional leadership, coordination and line management of a team including building the teams capacity to work collaboratively and access professional development as required.
  • understanding of the Australian Curriculum as it pertains to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
  • effective facilities management and a high level of finance capability (managing budgets).
  • understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages and the impact of these on communities, schooling and in the workforce.
  • ability to develop cultural programs for schools, Indigenous students, BCE staff and other external stakeholders.
  • written communication skills and the capacity to apply these to a wide range of reports, submissions and inward and outward facing planning documents.
  • high-level knowledge, skills and efficiency in digital literacy and information technologies.
