About St Mary MacKillop College 

St Mary MacKillop College is Canberra’s largest secondary school, operating across two campuses. Years 7 to 9 are based on the Padua Campus (Wanniassa) and Years 10 to 12 are based on the St Peter’s Campus (Isabella Plains). About the Role

The Learning Commons Coordinator is a member of the Curriculum Leadership Team and responsible to the Principal through the Assistant Principal Academic Care for the leadership of their team, in accordance with College policies.

The Learning Commons Coordinator leads and supervises a team of committed Learning Commons Teachers and will have a knowledge of teaching and learning in a variety of faculty areas. They will work in collaboration with the Learning Commons Teachers to promote physical and digital resources, literacy and numeracy initiatives, media and information literacy, inquiry-based learning, technology integration, and digital citizenship and ethical behaviours. The Learning Commons Coordinator will promote and support technology-rich resources and inquiry-based learning programs for students. They will have an active role in creating programs that support student academic achievement and contribute to the development of lifelong learners.

The Learning Commons Coordinator will work closely with all faculties in the College, develop a strategic plan for the implementation of library services and ICT to support teaching and learning at the College.

The successful applicant will bring excellent teaching skills as well as positivity in communicating and modelling a vision of excellence. We are seeking an energetic and collaborative leader, with effective skills to support the development of colleagues, curriculum leadership and quality learning outcomes for students.

This appointment is temporary to replace an employee who is on leave or secondment.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead and support the implementation of CECG’s Catalyst Program and High Impact Teaching Practices in the school through active engagement in professional learning, professional reading, professional conversations, and support processes.
  • Manage and lead a team of Learning Commons Teachers. 
  • Oversee the development of a dynamic curriculum in line with national and state requirements, and whole school goals.
  • Work with staff to incorporate new developments in teaching and learning.
  • Ensure courses cater for a range of individual needs and learning styles and work with teachers to meet the identified learning needs of students, modifying curriculum and assessment where appropriate.
  • Develop an individual professional learning plan and participate in appropriate professional development activities.
  • Develop effective and appropriate relationships with and between members of the community – students, staff and parents.
  • Provide prompt and timely follow-up with parents, students and other staff on issues that emerge for each student and ensure that department staff also communicate in a timely fashion with stakeholders.
  • Work with and support classroom teachers, enabling them to respond appropriately to individual circumstances and situations.
  • Work with relevant staff and other members of the community, to manage departmental processes for example, staff and student allocations, excursions, and the purchase of resources.
  • Ensure effective administrative processes in the department, including holding productive meetings, and maintaining accurate records.

Qualifications  

  • Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching.
  • Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) and/or Working with Children’s Check (WWCC) registrations.
  • Teaching Quality Institute (TQI) registration and/or NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) accreditation.

Selection Criteria 

  1. A comprehensive understanding of Catalyst initiatives and High Impact Teaching Practices and the need to provide appropriate support and feedback to teaching staff.
  2. A thorough knowledge of the Australian Curriculum with the ability to organise, select and design content for effective teaching and learning within the classroom and across the school.
  3. Demonstrated capability to coordinate a teaching team effectively, to supervise staff across different subject areas, to promote their own and the department’s professional development and to work with the staff to effect change.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills.  This includes high-level mediation and conflict resolution skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to build community.
  5. The ability to exercise sound judgment, including dealing with confidential matters.
