Mackay Northern Beaches State High School is located 10km from the centre of Mackay in the growing Northern Beaches area of Mackay. Our school is the newest secondary school in Mackay, opening in 2013. The school's 3 values are Care, Respect and Inclusion, with an emphasis being placed on these through the introduction of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) in 2023. About the Role

The position will be suited to an energetic and future focused individual who has the ability to lead the Department of Education's Inclusive Education Policy, predominantly in the Special Education Unit, but also as an advocate in all relevant areas of the school. Their practice needs to have a strong student-focused approach and ability to build strong professional relationships with students, teachers, parents and the community. As the Head of Special Education Services, you will play a vital role in developing the quality of teaching and learning and developing solid strategic practices for managing resources to achieve positive student learning outcomes. The successful applicant for this position will possess strong relational capabilities to ensure successful leadership across the faculty as well as participating in leadership of whole-school strategic initiatives. The successful Head of Special Ed Services will be an agile leader with a record of success in providing quality learning outcomes for all students and leading school improvement. You will also work in closely with Sector Teams to provide support for students who are requiring behavioural guidance

As Head of Special Education Services, you will have responsibility for leading the following activities and delivery of the following key tasks:

  • Manage and coordinate the delivery of high-quality advice and support provided by the Special Education Program and/or Early Childhood Development Program.
  • Lead and manage the Special Education Program and/or Early Childhood Development Program to provide advice to classroom teachers for students with disability as needed.
  • Provide high quality advice to the school leadership team, classroom teachers and other school staff to develop, plan and implement effective reasonable adjustments for students with disability.
  • Coordinate and provide intensive targeted teaching for students requiring intervention..
  • Provide, support and/or coordinate case management for students who require extensive or substantial adjustments.
  • Support classroom teachers and other school staff to access departmental or other external specialist services, professional development, and supports as needed.
  • Participate in school decision making processes as well as professional development to contribute to school goals, vision and planning.
  • Implement and coordinate school-wide systems including data systems to monitor students with disability and record the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.
  • Form and maintain partnerships with parents, other government agencies, and community groups to support students with disability.
  • Manage human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources to achieve goals.
