Kelso State School is situated on the outskirts of Townsville in an essentially rural area. It presents a tidy and welcoming environment, with recent upgrades to the exterior of many buildings and newly installed school branding adding to the appealing layout.

Through the AIP, the school is striving to achieve socially just and inclusive practices for all students. Strong early years transitions programs support a number of children prior to commencing formal schooling. The school ICSEA is 831 with 40% First Nations and 32% students with a disability. A large number of students have complex unmet needs. The Inclusion Program is leading the work around evidenced based educational adjustments to support student learning, engagement and success.

The leadership team is a united body implementing strategies and procedures to improve student learning outcomes.

About the Role

The Head of inclusion plays a key role in leading the following activities and delivery of the following key tasks:

  • Manage and coordinate the delivery of high-quality advice and support provided by the Inclusion Program
  • Lead and manage the Inclusion Program provide advice to classroom teachers for students with disability as needed.
  • Provide high quality advice to the school leadership team, classroom teachers and other school staff to develop, plan and implement effective reasonable adjustments for students with disability.
  • Coordinate and provide intensive targeted teaching for students requiring intervention.
  • Provide, support and/or coordinate case management for students who require extensive or substantial adjustments.
  • Support classroom teachers and other school staff to access departmental or other external specialist services, professional development, and supports as needed.
  • Participate in school decision making processes as well as professional development to contribute to school goals, vision and planning.

The school engages with PBL as our whole-school framework to promote positive behaviour. Kelso SS is a Berry Street Spotlight School with the majority of Teaching and Non-Teaching staff having also undertaken Berry Street Education Model training (BSEM). This training provides strategies for teaching and learning that enable staff to increase engagement of students with complex, unmet learning needs and to successfully improve all students learning outcomes. Staff are supported to access this training.
