About the School

We are a high performing school located in Smithfield, 15 kilometres north of Cairns. The Smithfield suburb sits at the gateway to the Northern Beaches, Cairns Highlands, Port Douglas, the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

Our school operates through the Tropical North Learning Academy, working closely with our main feeder school Trinity Beach State School and James Cook University. Smithfield State High School is committed to providing our students with the very best education.

About the Role

As the Head of Department - English your responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Lead the school department to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Promote socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Engage in lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Build partnerships with students, parents, agencies and community groups.
  • Be future-oriented and strategic.
  • Understand the policies and legislation affecting schooling, especially students and staff.
  • Manage department resources to achieve goals.
