About the school:

Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre is a Department of Education school operating within the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre at Wacol (approximately 35 minutes from the CBD).

The school plays an important role in the community by providing young people in detention with opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, and values that enhance their capacity to pursue positive choices in the future.

Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre operates in a multi-agency environment and the school is supported by staff from a range of other government departments especially Youth Justice and Queensland Health personnel. 

Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre offers a supportive learning environment for students with a focus on improving literacy, numeracy, vocational and personal skills.

As Head of Department you will lead a dynamic team of teachers to collaboratively design and deliver high-quality learning experiences which respond to the diverse needs of our students. You will play a key role in driving the school's strategic priorities for 2026 which includes a focus on embedding the school's signature teaching practices.

  • Leading curriculum development in alignment with school and departmental initiatives.
  • Developing and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning practices.
  • Fostering positive relationships with students, staff and the wider community.
  • Setting high standards for student and staff performance.
