Your Role:

As the Legal Officer, you will:

  • Process requests and ensure compliance with the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act), Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act), Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth), court ordered access to documents such as subpoenas, summonses, Notices of Non-Party Disclosure, s. 134A Evidence Act 1977 applications, Location/Recovery Orders and other requests for access to department information.
  • Perform functions as the department's delegated decision maker for applications made under the RTI Act, Chapter 3 of the IP Act and FOI Act.


Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver legal advisory services to a diverse range of departmental clients.
  • Exercise authority under the RTI, IP and FOI Acts for decisions on access to documents of the agency and/or official documents of the Minister.
  • Provide legal advice and support to departmental staff relating to requirements and application of the RTI Act, IP Act, FOI Acts and issues concerning privacy compliance.
  • Process requests for departmental information, departmental responses to external reviews and conduct internal reviews as necessary in accordance with the RTI, IP and FOI Acts.
  • Process requests and ensure compliance with court ordered access to documents such as subpoenas, summonses, Notices of Non-Party Disclosure, s.134A Evidence Act 1977 applications, Motor Accident Insurance Act 1994 applications, Location/Recovery Orders, police requests and other statutory requests for access.
