Job Overview

We are recruiting a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic English Teacher to join a specialist school in Chorley, Lancashire, teaching Key Stage 3 pupils.

The school provides a supportive, structured, and inclusive learning environment for pupils who may require additional support with their learning, communication, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, creative, and differentiated English lessons across Key Stage 3.
  • Teach a broad range of English skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
  • Develop pupils' confidence and enjoyment of English through engaging texts, activities, and learning opportunities.
  • Adapt lessons and teaching approaches to meet the individual needs, abilities, and learning styles of pupils.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and well-structured classroom environment that promotes learning and participation.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, confidence, and positive attitudes towards education.
  • Use effective classroom and behaviour management strategies to maintain a calm and purposeful learning environment.
  • Monitor, assess, and record pupil progress, using assessment to inform future planning and interventions.
  • Support pupils in working towards individual learning targets and EHCP outcomes where applicable.
  • Provide appropriate challenge and support to ensure all pupils make progress from their individual starting points.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, SEND professionals, parents/carers, and external agencies where required.
  • Contribute to departmental planning, curriculum development, assessments, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Promote pupils' literacy, communication, confidence, and wider personal development alongside academic achievement.
  • Maintain high expectations of behaviour, effort, attendance, and achievement.
  • Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification (essential).
  • Experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 level.
  • Strong subject knowledge across the English curriculum.
  • Previous experience working within a SEND, SEMH, alternative provision, or specialist setting is highly desirable.
  • Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills.
  • The ability to differentiate and adapt teaching to support pupils with a range of abilities and additional needs.
  • A creative and engaging approach to teaching English.
  • A calm, patient, resilient, and consistent approach.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting pupils who may have experienced barriers to education.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
