About the Location

The Deputy Principal position will be based at Western Cape College, Weipa Campus which is located 800km from Cairns by road, and only 200km from the northern tip of the Cape.  This position will work across the following sites:

  • Kowanyama State School: A remote Indigenous school catering for Pre-Prep to Year 10 (approximately 200 students). All students are EAL/D learners who speak traditional languages at home. Located 90 minutes by air or 8 hours by road from Cairns, Kowanyama is situtated on the banks of Magnificanet Creek, 20km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Kowanyama is an Alcohol Management Plan community.
  • Aurukun State School: Also known as Koolkan Aurukun Community School catering for Pre-Prep to Year 12 (approximately 233 students). The school provides a diverse education while maintaining cultural roots. Located 11 hours by road from Cairns on Cape York Peninsula's northwest coast. Aurukun is an Alcohol Management Plan community.
  • Lockhart State School: A remote Indigenous school catering for Pre-Prep to Year 12 (approximately 133 students). All students are EAL/D learners fluent in the traditional Lockhart Language. The school is known for strong learning and sports skills, and cultural ties. Located 11 hours' drive north of Cairns on Cape York Peninsula's eastern coast.  Lockhart River is an Alcohol Management Plan community.

About the Role

Kowanyama, Aurukun, and Lockhart State Schools are pilot sites in the Partnership Initiative, delivering tailored and differentiated support to 42 regional, rural, and remote Queensland schools. This initiative aims to strengthen ties between schools, early childhood education, the community, government, local businesses, and non-profit organisations. It will provide flexible, locally responsive strategies, co-designed with the community to ensure benefits are understood, owned, and implemented by local stakeholders.

As Deputy Principal (Senior Secondary Discrete Communities), you will have responsibility for leading the following activities and delivery of the following key tasks:

  • Develop a comprehensive plan for school to employment pathways in each of the discrete communities.
  • Actively promote and source VET RTO's to deliver into the discrete communities.
  • Development of Senior Secondary systems to enable compliance with QCAA and VET programs.
  • Work Experience Systems for each of the schools.
  • QCAA Compliance- QCE/QCIA.
  • Provision of VET in schools to ensure successful delivery of programs that are compliant with VET systems.
  • Provide Senior Secondary technical expertise to the Principal and Deputy Principal and HOD Secondary in each of the schools.
  • Develop links and partnerships with industry groups and organisations for school to work transitions
  • Develop links with external schools including Western Cape College to assist in the delivery of senior secondary programs.
  • Develop effective tracking systems- Case and Complex Case Management.
