About this job

Position Information

Hurstville Public School is a large, vibrant school located in the heart of southern Sydney. With a proud history of serving the Hurstville community for 150 years, the school has long been a cornerstone of education and opportunity in the area. Guided by our vision to transform lives socially, emotionally, and academically, we empower our diverse community to succeed as respectful, responsible learners, equipping them for meaningful, lifelong success.

Currently supporting 1048 enrolled students, we serve a dynamic and growing community in a highly urbanised setting. Our students represent over 40 cultural backgrounds, with 96.2% learning English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). The largest language group is students from Chinese language background, who make up 68.2% of enrolments. A significant number of these students are at the Beginning or Emerging levels of English proficiency. The next highest language-speaking backgrounds are Arabic (7.1%), Indian languages (6.8%), Mongolian (2.5%), Indonesian (2.5%), Vietnamese (2.3%). Mandarin and Cantonese are the most commonly spoken home languages. This rich cultural and linguistic diversity strengthens our school community and reinforces the importance of personalised teaching and inclusive learning environments.

Our students include a wide range of learners, including 9 Aboriginal students, four support classes for students with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities and autism in our Support Unit, and four Opportunity Classes for academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6. We are proud of our inclusive approach and the way we embed targeted supports across all areas of learning and wellbeing.

Our school community values high expectations and strong academic outcomes, while prioritising student wellbeing and engagement. Regular consultation—including focus groups, surveys, and external feedback—has helped shape a shared vision for future improvement. Families are actively involved through the P&C, and partnerships with universities, health services, and community organisations support our students to thrive. A broad range of extracurricular activities further nurtures student interests, friendships, and a love of learning.
