About the School
Koolan Aurukun State School, located on the west coast of Cape York, opened in 1974 and remains the only school in Aurukun.  Our moral purpose is that every child is unique, valued, capable of learning, and deserves equal access and participation in education, a powerful tool for change that opens lifelong possibilities.

About living in Aurukun
Aurukun is a remote Indigenous community located 11 hours by road from Cairns, and only 2 hours drive south of Weipa on the North West coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Home to around 1300 people, this community is the traditional homeland of the Wik, Wik Waya and Kugu people. The predominant traditional language spoken in Aurukun is Wik Mungkan; this is the first language of most Aurukun children.

About the Role
As Deputy Principal - Equity & Excellence (Curriculum) you will:

  • Lead the school community in the continuous improvement in educational outcomes for school students at Koolkan Aurukun SS with a focus on language, literacy and numeracy.

As the Deputy Principal - Special Education, you will:

  • Lead the school community through the school special education program (SEP) or early childhood development program (ECDP) to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students specifically those with disabilities.

As the Deputy Principal - Student Services, you will:

  • Lead the school community to nurture positive relationships between students, teachers and community by having a genuine desire to listen to and build real relationships with the young people in your care and the greater community, ensuring parents are equal partners, feel welcome and involved in their children's wellbeing.

Additionally, all Deputy Principals will:

  • Work closely with the Principal to successfully develop the quality of teaching and learning by implementing Departmental priorities in teaching and learning, managing human, financial facilities and resources of the school programs to achieve goals.
  • Be futures oriented, strategic, actively participating in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
  • Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students and staff within the school department.
  • Deputise for the Principal when required and uphold the Deputy Principalship as a values based, ethical and moral activity.

These roles will be non-teaching roles, however as the need arises you will be required to provide internal relief.
