About the School

Aurukun State School, located on the west coast of Cape York, opened in 1974 and remains the only school in Aurukun. We offer specialist teaching in music and physical education to support the interests and foster development of abilities in these important areas.

About living in Aurukun

Aurukun is a remote Indigenous community located 11 hours by road from Cairns, but only 2 hours drive south of Weipa on the North West coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Home to around 1300 people, this community is the traditional homeland of the Wik, Wik Waya and Kugu people. The predominant traditional language spoken in Aurukun is Wik Mungkan; this is the first language of most Aurukun children. A region rich in traditional cultural practices

About the Role

As the Deputy Principal, responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Assist the Principal to lead the school community to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Deputise for the Principal when required.
  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Form partnerships with parents, other government agencies, community groups, industry and business.
  • Manage resources to achieve goals.

The role will be a non-teaching role, however as the need arises you will be required to provide internal relief.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the school Principal, as a Deputy Principal - Secondary, you will directly contribute to the continuous improvement in educational outcomes for school students at Koolkan Aurukun SS with a focus on attendance, behaviour, literacy and numeracy. You will work with the Principal to successfully implement Departmental priorities in positive behaviour learning (PBL).
