Tannum Sands State High School is proud to be a culturally diverse community, with students from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds. This includes 11% of our students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual for the role of Community Education Counsellor to support our vibrant school community (2 days a week 7.25 flexible hours). This identified position is a critical role for someone who is highly relational, driven by a strong commitment to cultural understanding, and deeply invested in the wellbeing and success of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and foster strong relationships with students, families, and the broader community, with a focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Provide culturally appropriate counselling and guidance to enhance students' educational, emotional, and social outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff and external stakeholders to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Act as a key liaison for community engagement, ensuring the voices of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and families are heard and respected.

Mandatory Requirements for and Identified Role:   

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.   

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage   

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:   

  • of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;  
  • accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.   

By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.
